Quantum Alliance Launches to Set Standards as 6.04 Million BTC Sit Exposed

Nine blockchain firms launched the Quantum Alliance, an IETF-style standards body, citing 6.04 million BTC as quantum-exposed and warning of late-2020s risk windows.

Outputs

  1. Nine organizations launched the Quantum Alliance on Thursday as an open standards body for quantum-resistance claims.

  2. The group estimates 6.04 million BTC, roughly 30% of supply, sit quantum-exposed at rest.

  3. A contributor model flags March 2028 as an early quantum-risk window; Google research cut required qubits to under 500,000.

  4. The Alliance will work in four groups: migration, post-quantum ZK systems, wallet security and cross-chain compatibility.

  5. A BlackRock-, Strategy- and Coinbase-backed consortium has committed $15 million to quantum-migration work.

Nine blockchain organizations launched the Quantum Alliance on Thursday, an open standards body that will define what "quantum-ready" means and set a common method to test quantum-resistance claims across networks, wallets and infrastructure.

The group estimates that roughly 6.04 million BTC, about 30% of Bitcoin's supply, sit quantum-exposed at rest. Elliptic-curve signatures secure nearly every major blockchain account, and once a public key appears on the ledger, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could theoretically recover the private key and seize the funds.

Founding contributors include Quantus, Postquant Labs, Midnight Foundation, Keystone, Abelian and the security auditing firm Hacken. The roster spans base-layer protocols, privacy networks, rollups, hardware wallets and audit providers.

How will the Alliance operate?

Modeled on the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Alliance will advance proposals on public evidence and working implementations rather than corporate size or token holdings, and will publish all outputs openly. Its work runs through four groups: blockchain migration, post-quantum zero-knowledge systems, wallet security, and cross-chain compatibility.

"In the future, 'post-quantum cryptography' will just be called 'cryptography' and everything else will be in a museum," said Quantus founder and CEO Christopher Smith.

Why does the definition gap matter?

No agreed definition of "quantum-ready" currently exists, and no standard way exists to test one. A network can claim quantum resistance today with no shared understanding of what the claim covers or what evidence should support it. The Alliance formed to close that gap.

The exposure reaches beyond user balances. The same elliptic-curve cryptography guards stablecoin minting keys, bridges, oracles and governance contracts, so a single cracked privileged key could cascade across platforms.

Timelines keep tightening. The Alliance cites a cluster of forecasts pointing toward the late 2020s, including a model co-built by two Alliance contributors that flags March 2028 as an early risk window, and a Google Quantum AI study that cut the estimated qubits needed to break Bitcoin's cryptography to under 500,000. No machine can perform the attack yet.

Who else is moving on the threat?

The Alliance joins a widening industry response. Coinbase recently urged Bitcoin developers to begin the quantum migration now, suggesting preparations could take years. A consortium backed by BlackRock, Strategy and Coinbase has committed $15 million to the problem. Investor Kevin O'Leary has flagged quantum risk as a catch hanging over Bitcoin's long-term case.

The standards body now faces the practical test: whether its four working groups can produce testable migration and wallet-security criteria before the late-2020s windows its own contributors model arrive.
