Morgan Stanley Pushes Tokenized Equity Rollout to Q1 2027

Morgan Stanley has delayed tokenized equity support to Q1 2027 and pegged a $10 trillion RWA opportunity behind the move, per Hokanews. The shift extends the wait for on-chain U.S. stock trading at retail scale.

Outputs

  1. Morgan Stanley has pushed tokenized equity support to a Q1 2027 launch window, per Hokanews

  2. The bank tied the roadmap to a $10 trillion tokenized real-world-assets market estimate

  3. Ondo Finance, Galaxy Digital, Maple Finance, BNY and State Street have shipped competing tokenized products

  4. No U.S. broker has yet launched a fully compliant retail tokenized U.S. equity product

  5. SEC and CFTC remain mid-process on a cross-border tokenized-securities rule book

Morgan Stanley has pushed back the launch of tokenized equity support on its retail platform to the first quarter of 2027, according to a Hokanews report, deferring a planned Wall Street move into blockchain-based U.S. stock trading by roughly a year.

The revised timeline was paired with an internal estimate that the addressable market for tokenized real-world assets could reach $10 trillion — a number that has become the bank's reference point as it recalibrates its digital-asset roadmap.

The delay puts Morgan Stanley on a slower track than several rivals already shipping in the segment. Galaxy Digital, Maple Finance and traditional custodians including BNY and State Street have rolled out tokenized money-market and U.S. Treasury products over the past eighteen months, pulling in tens of billions of dollars of on-chain value, according to public RWA trackers.

For tokenized equities specifically, Ondo Finance has been the most aggressive issuer. Its Ondo Global Markets platform has issued tokenized wrappers of U.S. stocks for non-U.S. investors; Robinhood Markets has floated similar plans at the European retail level.

What does the rollout actually cover?

Tokenized equity support, as Morgan Stanley framed it, would let the firm's brokerage book move listed U.S. equities onto a blockchain settlement layer — replacing the industry-standard T+2 cycle with near-instant on-chain transfers and cutting per-trade reconciliation costs.

Pushing that capability to Q1 2027 means retail onboarding waits through another full year of conventional post-trade processing. The Hokanews report does not name the specific business line or asset manager partner that would underwrite the rollout.

Why a $10 trillion ceiling?

The $10 trillion RWA figure is consistent with a range of sell-side forecasts already in circulation. Boston Consulting Group and BlackRock have separately projected tokenized RWAs to land between $10 trillion and $30 trillion by 2030, while JPMorgan's Onyx unit has cited comparable upside in its annual payments outlook.

Morgan Stanley sitting at the higher end of the public range, per Hokanews, signals where the firm wants to position itself when the product finally ships — alongside banks angling for prime-brokerage and custody mandates tied to the same wave.

What's the regulatory gate?

U.S. broker-dealers clearing tokenized equities will need sign-off from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Both agencies remain mid-process on a cross-border tokenized-securities framework, and no firm, domestic or foreign, has shipped a fully compliant retail tokenized-U.S.-equity product at scale.

A Q1 2027 window would put Morgan Stanley past the earliest probable SEC framework release and inside the first period where market structure, custody and disclosure rules are expected to converge.

The bank is, in effect, choosing regulatory certainty over speed. The cost of missing the first product cycle is reputational; the cost of launching inside an unfinished rule book is enforcement.
